What should I do if my water heater is leaking from the top?

Shut off power or gas to the unit, then close the cold-water supply valve. A top leak usually means a loose inlet/outlet connection, a failing temperature–pressure (T&P) valve, or a bad fitting at the anode port. Do not keep heating a leaking tank. We provide 24/7 emergency repairs, maintenance, and replacements for tank and tankless systems across Dallas, Plano, and Rockwall, with financing available.

  • Turn off electricity at the breaker or set gas to “off.”
  • Close the cold-water shutoff valve.
  • Dry the top and gently tighten flex connectors.
  • Do not cap a leaking T&P valve. Call a pro.
